Last month when I received a letter from my son that he wanted nothing to do with us. He had recently told his wife we were no longer JWs and she reportedly went ballistic. I'm tearing up now just thinking about it. The cult breaks up families in the most vilest way.

i did very well on a low carb diet a year ago.
my doctor advised the mediterranean diet for heart health.. .
thus i'm trying to combine the two.
TotallyADD quoted correctly from the book he referenced. However I believe the book is wrong and should read inulin, not insulin, as jgnat said. Insulin is a hormone secreted by the pancreas that controls the metabolism and cellular uptake of sugars whereas inulin is a carbohydrate found in plants that yields fructose in the presence of water. (Taber's Cyclopedic Medical Dictionary, Edition 20, pp. 1117, 1136)
Below is the Wikipedia article from which jgnat quoted:
The artichoke contains about 10% protein, no oil, and a surprising lack of starch. However, it is rich in the carbohydrate inulin (76%), which is a polymer of the monosaccharide fructose. Tubers that are stored for any length of time will digest its inulin into its component fructose. Jerusalem artichokes have an underlying sweet taste because of the fructose, which is about one and a half times sweeter than sucrose. [ 4 ]
Jerusalem artichokes have also been promoted as a healthy choice for diabetics. The reason for this being the case is because fructose is better tolerated by people that are diabetic. It has also been reported as a folk remedy for diabetes. [ 5 ] Temperature variances have been shown to affect the amount of inulin the Jerusalem artichoke can produce. When not in tropical regions, it has been shown to make less inulin than when it is in a warmer region. [ 6 ]
When all is said and done the Jerusalem artichoke is a valuable addition to the diabetic diet. Hope this helps to clarify.

Welcome to James Jackson, Tech49, zophar.
It is good to see elders waking up but, like my husband who was an elder, you can see much more than we rank & file.
TotallyADD & I began questioning at about the same time, only we were cautious not to let each other know. He was the PO at the time. I had read an article in our local newspaper which led me to ajwrb.org, jwfacts.com, here, and others. He had recently been to Bethel and wondered why so many buildings were empty. He also couldn't see how the flood of Noah's day was global. I offered to research and that was the catalyst that started our journey out of the organization.
My advice to those with wives still in is to listen to their concerns and carefully, carefully, ask leading questions. Offer to research. And remind yourselves that if the organization really does teach the truth it will stand up to any scrutiny. Most importantly give your wives more than the usual attention. Show love and consideration for their feelings. And be patient. If you want to exit the best way to do it is together.
Keep posting. We want to hear more of your stories. We are here to support you.

I turned 60 in February. I take no meds, Rx or otherwise. TotallyADD grows a wonderful organic garden every year which goes a long way in keeping us healthy. I am learning the wild medicinal herbs in our area.

hi there everyone, looking for some advice on helping my sister who is studying the bible with a jehovahs witnesses to escape.
shes been studying for over a year now and attends meetings occasionally.
i have been looking for a way to help her for a while now and the answer fell into my lap last week, during her study last week she mentioned that her son was going to a birthday party.
How can it be wrong to celebrate birthdays when the angels celebrated Jesus' birth? Luke 2:8-14
Reopened Mind
no, he is not 5 years old, he is 59 today.
totallyadd like many of you was raised in the cult and not allowed to celebrate his birthdays.
he was always on the outside looking in, deprived of cake and comraderie.
No, he is not 5 years old, he is 59 today. TotallyAdd like many of you was raised in the cult and not allowed to celebrate his birthdays. He was always on the outside looking in, deprived of cake and comraderie. And for what? To not take away honor from Jehovah governing body. How selfish and petty can God governing body be? I'm sorry to say we raised our boys the same way. Put tongue in cheek and say, "Can't take time away from preaching to bring joy to a child".
Today TotallyADD gets to recapture a small part of his lost childhood.
A BIG HAPPY BIRTHDAY FROM YOUR WIFE!!!
Love from Reopened Mind
i was doing some research on the subject of beliefs and belief systems when i came across an on-line survey/test that supposedly helps you determine which religion or philosophy is most like your current beliefs.
if you're curious, you can take the quiz here: belief system selector quizafter answering the 20 questions the results were spit out!
tada!!!.
Apparently I am a Secular Humanist too. I attend a Unitarian Universalist congregation. In our congregation there are atheists, pagans, some with Quaker leanings, and more. It is not enough to say you are a UU. You have to qualify what kind of UU you are. I am a Secular Humanist, non-theist UU. JW is dead last.

as most of you know we got a very angry letter from our oldest son.
it hurt her very much.
i feel so bad for her because he attacked her for what i feel was very unfair.
nugget: I am happy for your husband and his father. His experience shows the importance of hearing both sides of the story before making any judgments. I know my son needs some time and space to mature.

flipper: As usual you come through with good advice and encouragement. Our son's authentic personality and cult personality are at war with each other and at present his cult personality is winning. What is ironic is the same JW therapist that my DIL is trapped by diagnosed my husband with ADD and helped him clear his mind so that he woke up from the cult. I, too, saw her briefly. She told me I was normal and didn't need therapy. Only those who have been-there-done-that can truly understand. TotallyADD and I are beginning to understand the pain of being shunned. Your daughters are still young and so are you. It is our wish for you that they don't waste too much more of your precious lifetimes hating the ones who love them unconditionally. Surely you have implanted in them enough of an authentic personality that it can find its way out. Your comments on JWN have been an anchor for us as we exited the cult. The part I appreciate the most is when I comment on one of your threads you give a reply. That makes me feel like I have been heard.
